of the united nations general assembly. palestinian president mahmoud abbas remains determined to take his bid for statehood to the u.n. despite pressure from the u.s. for abbas to instead resume peace talks with israel. nbc's tracie potts joins with us more from washington. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. president obama and the u.s. seem determined to convince him that the united nations is not the place to deal with this issue during his speech to the general assembly yesterday president obama said that peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the u.n. the security council is set to consider tomorrow the palestinian's request for full membership. he met with mahmoud abbas yesterday and also with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. president obama said we are committed to israel's security and the commitment is unbreakable, but there's another option here. they may put off a decision tomorrow on full membership or as the french suggested, they could upgrade the palestinians from observant status to non-member status. bottom line, they have work

for statehood in the general assembly. we know the united states will block this, but the fallout. is there concern in the administration that the region could blow up, literally? >> there really is. and the concern is not only that the region could blow up. that is less of that. it's more of the position that this u.s. vote could put -- puts the united states in. because the last thing that the obama administration wants to do right now, in the middle of the air an spring, when they've been talking about the aspirations for all these, you know, the democratic aspirations throughout the arab world, is to be seen as if they're standing in the way and vetoing a vote that's directly to this democratic aspirations of the palestinian people. that's one of the reasons why they're trying so hard, even still, to stop this. at the risk of trying not to get too far into the weeds with this. but they still think that there's some wiggle room this week where they could maybe stop a vote from going to the security council, which is where the u.s. would have to veto it. >> all right. thank you.
